   NEW YORK (AP) -- Astronomers say they have detected the first known
planet outside the solar system, an object that orbits a very dense star and
is perhaps 12 times as massive as Earth.
   The report challenges scientists' understanding of how some stars form.
   "This object I think is going to require some degree of wild speculation
to explain," said Harvard astronomy professor Ramesh Narayan, who was familar
with the work.
   Other researchers have reported apparent detections of planets outside
the solar system before, but some reports have been refuted and none is
widely accepted.
   Princeton University physics professor Joseph Taylor said he found the
new report persuasive. "They've got something there that is significant, no
question about it," he said.
   David Black, director of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston,
called the study "a good start" toward a convincing case for the planet's
existence.
   The detection is reported in Thursday's issue of the British journal
Nature by Andrew Lyne, Matthew Bailes and Setnam Shemar of the University of
Manchester's Nuffield Radio Astronomy Laboratories in Jodrell Bank, England.
   "We were very surprised," Lyne said in a telephone interview. The
scientists detected the apparent planet by analyzing radio waves from a very
dense object called a neutron star.
   The waves arrive in pulses about three times a second. But scientists
noticed that this highly precise "clock" would run about a hundredth of a
second fast for a while and then about a hundredth of a second slow. The
cycle repeated itself about every six months.
   Apparently, the speed-up occurred as the star edged about 1,500 miles
toward Earth and the slowdown when it moved away by the same amount, Lyne
said. The motion is separate from the Earth's orbit around the sun.
   The researchers concluded that the star was being pulled to and fro by
the gravitational tug of an unseen planet that orbits it about once every six
months.
   They wrote that the planet's mass is perhaps about 10 times that of
Earth, but Lyne said a better guess is 12 times. The planet is probably about
two to three times the diameter of Earth, depending on whether it is rocky
like Earth or gaseous like Jupiter, he said.
   It orbits the star about as closely as Venus orbits the sun, which is
about seven-tenths the diameter of Earth's orbit, researchers calculated.
   Lyne said it is most unlikely that anything lives on the planet.

YEs, I have noticed a lot of Alien topics in the media as well, commercials for
Chuckie Cheese's a kiddie pizza parlor, various shows. McGyver had an excellent
show on the topic of aliens.  There was a family who's mother was very sick
with a cancer, and some people came to them and told them that they were 'space
brothers' and that if the family gave them all their money, then they would be
able to be taken off the planet to a much better world.  McGyver came along and
showed the family how these people were tricking them, (he actually
demonstrated a method of creating an illusion that looked like a common ufo out
of charged methane gas (plasma?))  There was also another character involved in
the show that kept poping in and out wanting to sell everyone Vacuume cleaners.
but at the end of the show they saw a large UFO object take off into the sky,
supposedly picking up that mysterious man who kept appearing at the right
moments to save everyone.  And the show ended with McGyver saying 'It sure
makes ya think about it'

I thought that this ending was excellent because it didn't deny the existance
of Alien life on the planet, or show that without a doubt that there were
aliens, but just told people to 'Think' about it.

 From what I read of these messages we sure have some informed and inteligent
folks here. Forgive my possible ignorance on this subject but I find it easy to
believe in the exsistance of UFO's. I find it difficult to believe in a
goverment cover up of same. I don't see the logic in a coverup. I would
appriciate hearing some thaughts on this.

Me too.  I have 35A72.GIF which is a large picture that shows the face and the
alleged pyramids to the southwest of it.  (With enough imagination you can also
see another face to the right of the main face that is a right-side portrait of
an ape or gorilla...)  And I have MARSFACE.GIF which is a very grainy blowup.
 Then I have 70A13.GIF which seems to show the face and is labeled A, and some
indistinguishable area labelled B on the left of the picture...

So, what's going on?

  In an article in the August 1 Gulf Breeze Sentinel, Vicki Lyons of MUFON
wrote that about a dozen people saw the "red light" UFO hovering over the
Bob Sikes (Three Mile) Bridge at about 9:15 p.m. Friday, July 26.
  The sighting lasted a few minutes, and ended when the UFO brightened to
white and disappeared.
  Believe it or not, Ed Walters was driving across the bridge at
approximately that time.

 Oh yes, Little Timmy Bennett is real, and I had the dubious pleasure of
meeting him very briefly at the LA Expo West several months ago. However the
trip he made to Dulce, and all the fresh air he must have breathed did nothing
for the fog that must encompass his mind.

Timmy used to access ParaNet until it was learned that Timmy "could not work
or play well with others".......  at which time he was sent home. )-:

Subject:  A request for a glossary of terms.

I have been having trouble understanding what some people
are saying lately regarding 'gray' aliens because it seems
as though each person has a different meaning when they
speak of 'The Grays.'  Would it be a good idea for ParaNet
to form a glossary of terms so that it is more clear
what is being said?

The first one for me would be 'Grays.'
Let's look at Webster's definition for insight
(with appropriate apologies).

   2: a neutral or achromatic color ranging between black and white
3. gray vt : to make gray to become gray
4. gray n (slang)  1: any of the many extra-terrestrials that like to turn
   cows inside out and drink hormones instead of Gatorade.  2: evil
   conspirators responsible for all that is bad in the world.  3: any
   person in a body-stocking posing as a friend of the President.
   4: anyone holding a ray-gun.


Gee.  Such a broad range of meanings!!!

So that single individuals needn't do all the work, perhaps
the moderators could 'farm out' certain words for inclusion
and then simply edit them to suit uniformity.  I'm sure that
readers have many ideas of their own for words to be included.
People can therefore just post them with a defining
sentence/paragraph.  Everyone else can then pick it
apart and say what a great/lousy definition it is.

This could include a brief paragraph about certain events such
as Gulf Breeze, or George Adamski, etc.--perhaps that would need
to be of a point-counterpoint format.

I mean this in complete seriousness.  The black and white text of mail
messages makes it hard enough to read postings since one cannot
always discern the tone of the writer.  Ever-changing word
meanings add too much confusion.

After the definition standards have been established, penalties
for misuse would be for a skeptic to have to listen to a believer
for 1 hour, and vice versa.  Kind of like the rat in 1984.

For any of you that have read Timothy Good's excellent work "Above
Top Secret" perhaps you will remember the section concerning a
young Air Force lieutenant who was part of a special Air Force
Squadron detailed to fly special photo reconnaissance missions, to
film UFOs. Good used the pseudonym "Mel Noel". Some of you know his
real name, Guy Kirkwood.

Guy Kirkwood is a friend of mine, and I feel he has advanced the
cause of UFOlogy by his very courageous admissions. Guy lives in
San Diego, Ca. and now owns a custom automobile body business.

Two weeks ago while working on one of his auto's, there was an
explosion in his work place that badly burned Guy with second and
third degree burns over the back of his body. Guy has been in the
burn unit in intensive care since then. Thankfully he is in the
process of recovering, and to help this process he has undergone a
number of skin graft operations. I have spoken to Guy on the phone
a couple of times, and he would appreciate hearing from one or all
of you. If you can take a couple of minutes out of your schedule,
send Guy a get well note, he would sure appreciate it. The
